Sêr Cymru National Research Network (NRN) in Advanced Engineering and Materials (AEM)

The Sêr Cymru National Research Network (NRN) in Advanced Engineering and Materials (AEM) is founded on Wales’ strong tradition of engineering ingenuity. The network is a pan-Wales initiative focused on Advanced Engineering and Materials and anchored by the network’s core academic partners within the Engineering Colleges of Swansea, Cardiff and Bangor Universities as well as industrial partner, TWI Ltd. The project aims to promote research excellence and industrial engagement across a wide spectrum of engineering challenges.

The NRN AEM is a network of 100 researchers having funded a large portfolio of projects including PhD studentships, Research Fellowships and major research project awards. These projects explore three major thematic areas within engineering namely sensors and devicescomputational engineering and advanced materials.

To date the network has achieved in excess of having 100 papers published, including those featured across a number of high impact journals, over 150 conference abstracts as well as generating £10 million in research funding and over £4 million in industrial funds.

The project has also inspired hundreds of young science enthusiasts through various STEM Outreach activities and is one of the main sponsors of the Science Pavilion at this year’s National Eisteddfod in Anglesey.

The NRN AEM wants to develop collaborative partnerships through which increased research funding, world class publications and a high profile international presence for Engineering within Wales can be realised and will host Wales’ first major engineering event to celebrate Welsh engineering ingenuity this October in Cardiff and bring both industrialists and academics together to enhance the face of this engineering ingenuity.
