Schools in Wales are encountering rapid growth in the availability and influence of artificial intelligence, yet teacher understanding and confidence remain uneven. To ensure AI is used safely, ethically, and in ways that enhance learning, teachers require clear subject knowledge, strong critical evaluation skills, and alignment with Welsh Government policy. This course supports consistent, informed practice across Wales, addressing safeguarding, learner wellbeing, and Estyn priorities while strengthening professional judgement in an evolving digital landscape.

What is AI? - Machine learning, LLMs, Generative AI, brief history, what place AI has in education
Ethics of AI - Hallucinations, Bias, Limitations of platforms, Legal aspects, personal code of conduct
Prompt engineering using AI - Practical session exploring what makes a good, strong, useful and ethical prompt
How can AI support teachers? - Planning activity on how to use to support processes within education

How long is this course?

This course is approximately 6 hours of live remote learning

This live online remote course will enable you to participate in discussion and activities with other participants, led by a STEM professional development leader.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Develop a secure understanding of how artificial intelligence works including machine learning and large language models, and be able to explain their capabilities, limitations, risks, and ethical implications.
Apply informed professional judgement when using AI in schools by critically evaluating AI outputs, recognising bias and inaccuracies, and using AI appropriately to enhance teaching and learning.
Have the confidence to use AI safely and ethically within Welsh policy and safeguarding frameworks by understanding requirements around online safety, data protection (GDPR), learner wellbeing, and Estyn expectations for responsible practice.
Support whole‑school readiness and community awareness of AI by modelling appropriate AI use, promoting student digital wellbeing, and communicating key messages to learners, colleagues, and parents.
