This event is not available in the language you're currently viewing in

Overview

Cost: Free

This course is delivered in Welsh.

Summary

Computational thinking is a core skill within the Digital Competence Framework (DCF) and is increasingly recognised as essential for problem‑solving across all Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs).

This course supports educators to confidently understand, teach, and embed the four pillars of computational thinking (abstraction, decomposition, algorithms, and pattern recognition) through practical approaches. By strengthening practitioners’ knowledge and confidence, the course helps ensure learners can apply computational thinking purposefully and creatively across the curriculum.

Who is it for?

Teachers and leaders in primary settings, in state schools in Wales.

What topics are covered?
  1. What is computational thinking
  2. Explanations, practical experience and examples of implementing:
  • Abstraction
  • Decomposition
  • Pattern recognition
  • Algorithms
  • Opportunity to apply to AoLEs and PS stages
  • Mapping computational thinking to the DCF

How long is this course?

This course is approximately 6 hours of live remote learning.

How will you learn?

This live online remote course will enable you to participate in discussion and activities with other participants, led by a STEM professional development leader.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand what computational thinking is
  • Explain each of the 4 pillars of computational thinking and give examples
  • Map the DCF to areas of computational thinking
  • Gain practical experience of activities involving all pillars in various AoLEs
