Summary

This course gives teachers practical experience in using Micro:bits as data loggers to create meaningful, data‑driven learning across the curriculum. Through hands‑on activities, participants learn how to collect, analyse, and present real‑world data while developing confidence in basic programming, physical computing, and computational thinking. The course also supports teachers in planning purposeful learning sequences, embedding data security and long‑term digital thinking, and adapting activities to suit any subject area.

Who is it for?

Suitable for secondary teachers of all subjects

What topics are covered?

  • Introduction to Data-Driven, Cross-Curricular Learning
  • Getting Started with Micro:bit and Data Logging
  • Getting Started with Micro:bit: A Hands‑On Project Workshop
  • Subject‑Focused, Hands‑On Micro:bit Activities — Plan and Implement in Session
  • Embedding Data Security and Long‑Term Planning Within Your Subject Area and Beyond

How long is this course?

This course is approximately 6 hours of live remote learning.

How will you learn?

This live online remote course will enable you to participate in discussion and activities with other participants, led by a STEM professional development leader.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define and design data-driven projects that support authentic cross-curricular learning and align with the Curriculum for Wales and the Digital Competence Framework
  • Use Micro:bits (physical devices or simulators) to collect and log data, handling data accurately through purposeful real-world contexts
  • Apply fundamental programming concepts (sequencing, selection, iteration, inputs and outputs) to create or adapt Micro:bit-based activities that generate meaningful data
  • Plan and teach structured classroom projects using effective pedagogical approaches
  • Develop an implementation plan for their own subject area, including consideration of progression, resourcing, online alternatives, data ethics and security, and optional engagement with STEM Ambassadors to strengthen real-world relevance
