Summary

Many primary practitioners are increasingly expected to embed data, digital competence and computational thinking across the Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs). However, confidence with using physical computing devices such as the Micro:bit for real data collection varies widely. This course addresses the need for accessible, practical training that enables teachers to gather, analyse and apply data meaningfully across the curriculum, supporting progression in PS1–3 and improving digital skill development.

Who is it for?

Teachers and leaders in primary settings, in state schools in Wales

What topics are covered?

  • Introduction to using the Micro:bit
  • Practical sessions on using the Micro:bit across AoLEs
  • Understanding input systems (e.g. buttons, light sensors, accelerometer)
  • Downloading the data, analysing and presenting and drawing conclusions
  • Explore application in participants own project/ themes
  • Use Machine Learning to train a model to retrieve specific data
  • Mapping data collection exercises to the DCF and AoLEs

How long is this course?

This course is approximately 6 hours of live remote learning

How will you learn?

This live online remote course will enable you to participate in discussion and activities with other participants, led by a STEM professional development leader.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Understand what data loggers do and recognise the benefits they offer for teaching and learning
  • Set up and use Micro:bits effectively
  • Design and deliver cross‑curricular coding activities across all six AoLEs
  • Support learners to download, analyse and interpret real‑world datasets
  • Explore introductory machine learning applications and identify opportunities for pupil‑led investigation
  • Plan data‑driven projects linked to PS1–3 progression steps and aligned with the Curriculum for Wales
