Summary

This course supports primary practitioners to develop confidence in teaching programming in line with the Curriculum for Wales, with a clear focus on learner progression across the Progression Steps.
 
Participants will explore how key programming concepts, including sequence, repetition, selection and variables, develop from early to upper primary. Through practical activities and examples from a range of tools, the course examines how teaching can support increasingly sophisticated understanding over time.
The course considers pedagogy, curriculum links and strategies for deepening understanding, enabling practitioners to plan and deliver structured programming experiences that support learners’ problem‑solving skills within the Science and Technology Area of Learning and Experience.

Teachers and leaders in primary settings, in state schools in Wales.

  • Programming concepts within the Curriculum for Wales, including sequence, repetition, selection and variables
  • Understanding progression in programming across the Progression Steps
  • Supporting learner development from early to upper primary
  • How programming learning develops from following instructions to designing, testing and refining solutions
  • Using practical activities and a range of tools to support conceptual understanding
  • Pedagogical approaches that support progression and deepen learning
  • Planning structured programming experiences that support problem‑solving

This live online remote course will enable you to participate in discussion and activities with other participants, led by a STEM professional development leader.
 
Outcomes
 
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
 
  • Apply the key elements of computational thinking when analysing and modelling problems
  • Teach core programming concepts: sequence, repetition, selection and variables through practical activities
  • Use pedagogical approaches such as PRIMM, Parson Problems and Pair Programming to support progression
  • Design programming activities that solve problems across the curriculum and map these to the DCF and relevant AoLEs
