Perennials help maintain soil cover and structure, have deeper root systems than annuals, and thus provide soil stability and enhanced soil health. They can also tap available soil nutrients, enhance biodiversity, make more water available to plants, and capture and sequester carbon.
Edible perennials offer huge value to market gardens in the UK and yet are hugely under used.
Growing perennials in addition to annuals has several important benefits, and the market gardens that edge design and manage are often 50% or more perennial-based.
This session will be led by Rach of Edge Design and will help growers learn more about edible perennials and the key benefits of growing them for your business.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the 4 main groups of edible perennials for the UK climate
2. List 5 key benefits of growing edible perennials
3. Name at least one key species from each of the perennial groups we discuss
