Growing sunflowers with maize - using companion cropping to increase home-grown protein at Tafarn y Bugail

Overview

Cost: Free

Join us at Tafarn y Bugail, which is part of the Farming Connect Our Farms network to find out more about their journey of growing maize with sunflowers as a companion crop which will form part of the diet for their 400 Holstein all year-round calving herd.

With the increasing cost of protein concentrate, Llyr Griffiths, Tafarn y Bugail was keen to try out an alternative home-grown protein crop for the high yielding herd to reduce feed costs and the farms carbon footprint and has done so through the support of the Farming Connect Try Out Fund.

During this on-farm event, there will be an opportunity to learn more out in the field about how sunflowers can be used as a source of home-grown protein, if sunflowers can be grown successfully as a companion crop in West Wales, discuss management and harvesting techniques as well as see the crop before harvesting.

Booking is not essential but encouraged for catering purposes.
