Horticultural Composting for Sustainable Soil Health

Overview

Cost: Free

Composting is a vital practice in maintaining soil health, offering growers a sustainable way to recycle organic waste, improve soil structure, and enhance nutrient availability. In this workshop, participants will learn the science and practical applications of composting, including the creation and management of compost heaps, nutrient content, and the development of effective nutrient management plans. The day will culminate in a tour of a biodynamic farm, where participants can see these principles in action on a farm that grows a variety of soft fruits and vegetables.

Key Learning Objectives:

Soil Health: Understand the role of compost in soil health, including improving soil structure, water retention, and root accessibility.

Waste Reduction: Explore how composting can help reduce waste by turning organic materials like green waste, animal manure, and carbon into valuable soil amendments.

Nutrient Management & Planning: Learn about the nutrient content of compost and how to develop nutrient management plans to ensure balanced soil fertility.

Compost Making & Management: Gain practical skills in creating and managing compost heaps. Participants will learn the ideal conditions for decomposition, how to maintain a healthy compost pile, and troubleshoot common issues.

Uses of Compost: Discover the various uses of compost, both for soil enrichment and as a growing medium, and understand its commercial potential for sale to other growers or hobbyists.

Session Format:

Interactive Discussions: Engage in discussions about composting techniques, common challenges, and best practices. Peer-to-peer knowledge sharing is encouraged to promote a collaborative learning experience.

Demonstrations: Hear from Liz and Oliver who will demonstrate the art of making and managing compost heaps on-site.

Farm Tour: A guided tour of the biodynamic farm will demonstrate the use of compost in real-life farming systems, providing a deeper understanding of how compost contributes to overall farm health and productivity.
