Horticulture - Precision application of herbicides for late-stage weeding

Cost: Free

With the limited efficacy of residual herbicide options in many crops, control options for late weeds are few.

Chris Creed and Ben Barnes from ADAS will deliver this training day at Matthew’s PYO farm, Brecon. From Mid-June they open for Pick your Own fruit and vegetables and have extended the season with a Pumpkin patch.

There will be a discussion of spot/directed/precision treatment of crops with herbicides and an overview of current manufacturers. These can be used very effectively to control many common weeds, all the way up to harvest.

We will have a look at how the crops at the farm are performing and discuss crop updates for the 2024 season. We will hear from the agronomists and other growers to aid peer learning.

The day will include a demonstration of precision weeding machinery which can be used in a variety of vegetable crops.

Key Learning objectives

·         Explore Weed control options after failure of residuals at sowing or planting

·         Understand the use of precision herbicide application technology

·         Improve weed identification skills

·         Refresher on key pumpkin agronomy for a successful 2024 crop
