Cost: Free

Study visit to kings nurseries, a tour of a leading grower /retailer producing bedding and basket plants perennials and shrubs supplying nurseries and garden centres throughout Wales and the midlands.

30th April 2024

A chance to visit a modern, efficient nursery whilst bedding and basket plant production is in full swing. Their will be a tour of production facilities focusing on how recent investments in increasing levels of automation has improved efficiency, helping to minimise wastage. This has freed up staff time contributing to the smooth running of the nursery even when the pressure is on in peak season. Staff have time to continue to carry out essential cultural tasks such as pinching, cutting back and crop walking. These are the types of jobs that can slip when nurseries are very busy e.g. when high numbers of plants are being dispatched. To include an overview of cropping outside of key periods of bedding and basket plant production.

The day will also focus on how propagation of incoming stock has been outsourced which contributes to the efficiency of the business. Their will be an opportunity to discuss peat reduction and the transition to peat free production in more depth along with pest and disease management from an integrated pest and disease management (IPDM) perspective.

Key Learning Objectives:

·        How the use of automation can increase throughput and efficiency in ornamental plant production.

·        How to evaluate whether to buy in or propagate young plants in house.

·        Sharing knowledge and experience of peat reduction and the transition to peat free production.
