The main advantage of perennial crops is that once established, they generally only need re-planting once every 5-10 years. This reduces the need to till the land, saving time, fuel, and investment, which is a double win for grower's bottom line and soil health.
Another key advantage of some perennial crops is that growers can build up their own stock of the plant and select the best. This saves large amounts of money as you don’t need to buy from propagators and can improve your own strains.
These crops often have short seasonal windows, allowing them to fetch good money. Especially those that crop within the hunger gap when UK produce is in short supply.
This session will cover the agronomy and economics of asparagus, forced/green pull rhubarb, and Jerusalem/globe artichokes.
Learning objectives:
• Soil health advantages of perennial crops
• Plant health benefits from own propagation
• Extending marketing through the hungry gap
• Marketing and farm tourism
• Crops that capture the public imagination
