Horticulture Workshop: Summer Orchard Pruning

Overview

Cost: Free

Summer pruning will cover the wide range of techniques used throughout the summer months, from the experts at Orchard Daughters / Merched y Berllan.

After a brief recap on the basic principles of orchard management, this session will be primarily field based and practical. We’ll look at tools & biosecurity and develop summer pruning skills on an existing farm orchard. The focus will be on apples, pears and plums.

Learning objectives.  farmers and growers will learn how to:

·        Plan for the development of existing fruit, fruit thinning, producing fruiting buds for the following year, aspects of restorative summer pruning, and the critical role of sap flow across all these techniques with a focus on the importance of timing.

·        Diversify their business with a new top fruit orchard

·        Better manage the orchard trees they already have

·        Extend an existing orchard

This practical summer session is ideal for those who attended the ‘Introduction to orchard design and management’ sessions.

Please note:

·        Please provide your own transport, there is parking near the site and on the roadside but we would encourage car sharing if possible.

·        Lunch will be provided.

·        We will be using the inside of a large agricultural shed on a working farm and stables, and visitors cannot wander the site unsupervised.

·        Please wear suitable footwear for the site and accessing the outdoor orchard.

·        There are bee hives within the orchard, it would not be advisable for anyone with a bee sting allergy not to attend.
