Hungry Gap and Tunnel Rotations

Overview

Cost: Free

Tunnels play a very important role in extending the cropping season. Rotations are key to that and to manage potential pest and disease problems. In this workshop, delivered by Iain Tolhurst, we will learn about improving tunnel rotations and how to squeeze more output during the early part of the season.

The Hungry Gap comes at a particularly  difficult time  of the year for  market gardeners . Some crops are running out, new sowings  won’t  be ready for ages, and you are spending money on materials and labour. How do you reduce the effects  of  this on your business and what can you improve upon to lessen the effect of the hungry gap?  Join us for this workshop  to improve your cropping ,  grow more and store longer  to make your business more resilient during the early part of the growing season .

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the crops available to growers that fill the Hungry Gap.

  • Understand the business implications of the Hungry Gap’s lack of production and how to mitigate this.

  • Develop knowledge to use tunnels/protected spaces to build cropping plans for the early season.

  • Understand crop rotation in tunnel production.
