IPM in Practice: An Innovative Approach to Integrated Pest Management in Welsh Strawberry Crops

Cost: Free

Thrips are one of the most significant pests affecting 60-day strawberry crops in Wales, potentially leading to serious fruit damage and crop losses.

This event will highlight a Farming Connect Try Out Fund project, looking at a specific Integrated Pest Management method, testing the use of flowering Alyssum as a trap crop for thrips in an outdoor 60-day strawberry crop. The trial aims for the Alyssum to attract and trap incoming thrips adults and for the predators to feed on the thrips before and during the strawberry flowering period which is vulnerable to thrips damage. This strategy will build on the existing limited knowledge of using Alyssum in tunnel-grown everbearers and will provide a practical, cost-effective method for thrips control in outdoor 60-day strawberry crops and allow a significant reduction in the use of chemical pesticides in the Welsh strawberry sector.

This event will coincide with the flowering assessment stage of the trial which is being lead by ADAS in collaboration with the farmer. For this event ADAS will deliver a session and Q&A on the theory of the project, followed by a farm tour.

The aim of this session is to:

  • highlight the Try Out Fund project on thrip control in Welsh strawberry production
  • provide an overview of IPM in soft fruit production focussing on strawberries in a PYO business model
  • understand and explore the innovative approaches involved in the trial, specifically using biological control and trap plants to reduce pest damage and chemical inputs
  • tour the project site to better understand the trial and the farm business
