Our Farms Farm Walks - September 2024 – Tyddyn Cae

As part of a unique series of 15 farm walks, Ifan and the family welcome you to the Farming Connect Our Farms Network open day at Tyddyn Cae, to see and hear more about the on-farm trials they are undertaking as part of the network.

During the farm walk, expert speakers will demonstrate and discuss the on-farm trials on-going at Tyddyn Cae and the following topics will be covered:

  • Streamlining the milking routine for greater efficiency with Tom Greenham
  • Optimising a split block calving system to enable herd expansion without further investment in infrastructure with Kate Burnby
  • Using real time data at silage making to drive milk from forage with Dave Davies
  • The advantages of hedges and woodland for a dairy farm with Geraint Jones

About Tyddyn Cae:

  • Located on the Lleyn Peninsula, Tyddyn Cae is a 190-hectare farm
  • The autumn calving herd of 390 New Zealand Friesian and crossbred cows calve in 12 weeks and cows average 6,800 Litres / 580kg milk solids per cow per year with 3,000 litres coming from forage.

As part of the Our Farms Network, Tyddyn Cae are focusing on:

  • A review of antibiotic usage
  • Improving quality and utilisation of home-grown crops with a reduction in nitrogen
  • Making the most of grass and options for periods of drought

There will also be an opportunity to catch-up with industry stakeholders and see demonstrations of various technologies related to the project work on various stalls.

Refreshments will be provided following the farm walk.

Booking is not essential but encouraged for catering purposes.
