Sheep Lameness Workshop

Overview

Cost: Free

Lameness in sheep causes financial losses estimated at £28 million per year to the UK industry.

It creates serious welfare implications and negatively impacts public perception of sheep farming. In addition, two thirds of antibiotic use in sheep is thought to be used in treating lameness.

In this workshop, attendees will learn about the clinical signs, transmission, and diagnosis of the common causes of sheep lameness in the UK. Attendees will learn about the infectious causes of lameness (scald, footrot and CODD) as well as the non-infectious causes.  The impact of lameness on welfare and production will be discussed, as well as how to control and prevent cases.  Attendees will appreciate the need to include biosecurity and biocontainment measures in a lameness-specific health plan for their farm.
